Waterloo Nassau Infantry

As the Grand Duke of Nassau (a German state), King William of the Netherlands also brought to the battle of Waterloo over 7000 Nassau infantry in 8 battalions. The Nassauers formed an important part of the Duke's army and were heavily involved in the battle. The Nassauers were in the thick of the battle from the defence of Hougoument to the final final French attack. Everyone is aware of the British defenders at Hougoument but how many dioramas or paintings show the Nassauers who were also in the chateau? (History is not only written by the victors, history is written by those who write a lot and who write often.) They also fought in the defence of La Haye Sainte, Papelotte and as far to the left as Frichermont.
Each Nassau battalion was composed of 1 company of flankers, 1 company of grenadiers and 4 center companies of fusiliers. The flankers were distinguished by shoulder rolls or epaulettes and the grenadiers were distinguished by shoulder rolls or epaulettes and a busby.
