The Thracians were a fearsome band of warriors in ancient Greece. They came from the Balkans and were composed of various hill tribes a.o. Odrysians, Triballians, Getae and Illyrians. Alexander hired a division of 7000 Thracians for his wars against the Persian empire. They functioned as skirmishers and light infantry to support the flanks of Macedonian phalanxes. Thracians took part in every significant battle or campaign. An elite force of 1000 Thracians called Agrianes with their blade like rhomphaia weapons enabled Alexander to win a desperate battle against the Indian king Porus and his elephants at the Hydaspes river.
