Here are some pics of the Persian heavy cavalry who fought the Macedonian army in the battles near the river Granikos, at Issos and on the planes of Gaugamela. The Persian heavy cavalry units consisted of Persian noblemen. There Median mounts were well protected by metal plated or scale armor. The cavalrymen were dressed in linnen or scale body armor, bronze or metal helmets and were armed with javelins and swords. They were a better match for there Macedonian (mounted) counterparts. With there protective armor for horses and riders alike they were the predecessors of the Cataphract cavalrymen of the 3rd century AD.
