The mounted infantry was created to supplement the inadequate number of Imperial cavalry in South Africa at the time of the Zulu War, because of this the men were not all from the same regiment. Infantrymen who claimed some experience with horses volunteered so that many regiments were represented. In this model of a late war detachment we have privates from the 24th, 80th, & 3rd Regiments with NCO's from the 60th Rifles and an officer from the 1st Dragoon Guards. The officer, from HaT 8179, has exchanged his saber for a Zulu knobkerry. The horses have been secured in an abandoned cattle kraal, while the infantry moves out in skirmish formation.
