Although invented by an American and patented in 1926, the Gatling gun did not prove its value on the battlefield until 1879. In that year, the British deployed Gatlings in two theaters: Zululand and Afghanistan. These figures are painted as a company of the 60th Rifles, although they could just as easily be painted as Royal Artillery, Marines, common redcoats or khaki-coated Tommies.
